WILLIAMSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT'S

911 COMMUNICATIONS CENTER

How do we know where you are? A computer! Here you can see the small red telephone that shows this 911 call came from the intersection of Lincoln and Jackson Streets.

There are 10 different computers at the 911 center to allow up to three operators to work at one time. Someone is on duty 24-hours a day, 7-days-a-week.

The communications specialist can open doors, transmit on multiple radio frequencies or monitor areas of the department by using the touch screen features.

With each new phone or change of number, the 911 computers are updated to insure that the information is current and correct.

There is another computer that is linked to a nationwide information center. The communications specialist can check a driver's license, see if a person is wanted, an item stolen or send messages to every police department in the nation within seconds.

Computers and communications specialists are ready when you need help.

But remember, it is against the law to place a prank or false call to 911. Even if you hang-up the phone, a police officer will investigate the call.
